An hour project of drilling and running flexible hose is well worth the pleasure of ice on demand. Select the location for the valve on your water line. The folks at GE Appliances recommend using a vertical pipe, if available.
If you must use a horizontal pipe, place the hole for the valve either on the top or side of the pipe. Avoid using the bottom of the pipe, as this may draw sediment into the ice maker. Take caution to not allow water to seep into your drill and make sure to only pierce one side of the pipe. Attach the valve to the pipe using two pipe clamps.
Tighten the screws on the clamps until the sealing washer swells. Avoid over-tightening; you can crush the copper pipe if you apply too much pressure.
Route the tubing to the refrigerator. Store an additional 8 feet of tubing behind the refrigerator. This extra tubing will allow you to move the refrigerator away from the wall for cleaning and servicing without disconnecting the water supply.
Slide the compression nut and ferrule onto the tubing. Connect the tubing to the valve by hand, then turn one extra time with a wrench.
Turn the water on to flush the tube into a pail for at least 1 quart or until the water runs clear. Shut off water at the new valve. Connect the ferrule and pressure nut to the hose at the refrigerator end.
Attach the nut to the refrigerator valve. If applicable to your refrigerator, run the tubing through the hose clamp to hold it at the preferred angle. Do not overtighten the compression nut. Tighten the compression nut onto the union. This will clean the water supply system and clear air from the lines. Related Questions How to change the light bulb in Samsung Refrigerator?
